Diego Luis Coppens Zamora (Estelí, 1992) is a Belgian-Nicaraguan activist who had to leave Nicaragua due to the brutal repression of the 2018 protests. In Nicaragua, Diego studied tropical agroecology at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua in León. His 23 year-old sister, Amaya Coppens Zamora, was still studying medicine there when the protests erupted. She took on a leadership role in the student protests and new student movement, and was imprisoned in September 2018 due to her activism. Forced to flee to Belgium following the imprisonment of his sister, Diego became an activist against political imprisonment in Nicaragua. He recently moved to Mexico, where he was admitted to an applied ecology Master program, and will be joining us from Skype.
